Pollution-free trams facing decline in Kolkata as activists demand revival of historic transport

The iconic tram system in West Bengal, set to celebrate its historic 150th year, is facing a decline in the heart of Kolkata.

The SUCI Communist Party has taken to the streets to advocate for the revival of trams, highlighting the reduction in routes from around fifty to just three, with several lines, including Peach Road, being covered.

The government cites traffic congestion as a reason for limiting tram routes, while protesters argue that illegal parking is the real cause. Activists marched from Dharmatala Tram Depot to Paribhan Bhawan, urging authorities to resume tram services and create new employment opportunities.

The SUCI Communist Party submitted a deputation at the Transport Building after encountering barricades on Ganesh Chandra Avenue.
