A portion of a dilapidated house collapsed on Tuesday night in the Tamalipara area of Chinsurah, Hooghly district. The house, owned by Haridas Dutta, had earlier been declared unsafe by the Hooghly-Chinsurah Municipality. Due to an unresolved dispute between co-owners, the building had not been demolished despite its deteriorating condition. Continuous rainfall over the past few days had further weakened the structure.
The rear section of the house gave way and collapsed in front of the neighbouring Das family’s residence. As a result, Savita Das and her grandson were trapped inside their home after the main entrance got blocked by debris. No one was injured in the incident. Fire brigade personnel arrived on the spot shortly after being informed and began the process of clearing the obstruction.
Local MLA Asit Mazumdar and the Municipality’s Health Department CIC, Jaydev Adhikari, also reached the site. The municipal authorities later arranged for the removal of the collapsed portion that was obstructing the Das family’s entrance. The area has been cleared and normal access to the house has been restored.
