Posta merchants go on indefinite strike to protest heckling of its office bearers
Commercial activities at Kolkata's Posta Bazar came to a standstill after traders announced an indefinite strike following the assault on Merchant Association General Secretary Bishwanath Agarwal. According to the information provided, a group of 50 to 60 people allegedly assaulted Agarwal, threw eggs at him, and raised slogans accusing him of corruption. The incident triggered a major law and order situation, leading to the disruption of business operations across the wholesale market.
During the incident, the crowd allegedly assaulted Agarwal in public and repeatedly shouted slogans against him. The attackers accused him of corruption and alleged links with political figures. Following the incident, members of the Posta Bazar Merchant Association called an emergency meeting and announced an indefinite strike. Association President Sitanath Ghosh also urged members to assemble at the association office for a protest rally against the incident.
The Merchant Association stated that the indefinite strike would continue until further notice in protest against the assault on its General Secretary. Traders suspended commercial operations across the market and gathered at the association office to participate in the protest. The strike was announced through an official appeal issued by the association following the incident.
