A third-year student of Jadavpur University died after drowning in a campus reservoir on Thursday night, raising shock and concern among students and faculty. The deceased, identified as 21-year-old Anamika Mandal from Nimta, was found unconscious in the water around 10:30 pm.
At the time of the incident, a cultural program by the Natya Club was underway near Gate Number Four, in which Anamika was also participating. She was rushed by classmates and security staff to KPC Hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The postmortem confirmed the presence of water in her lungs and ruled out any internal or external injuries, pointing to drowning as the cause of death. However, the viscera has been preserved for further forensic examination to determine whether any foreign substance was involved.
While authorities confirmed drowning as the initial cause, questions remain unanswered about how the student ended up in the reservoir. Investigations are ongoing.
