Power supply cut at Naihati councillor's home over electricity 'meter tampering'

Electricity department officials disconnected power connections at several houses in Naihati after allegedly detecting meter tampering and electricity theft during a special inspection drive. Among the affected properties was the residence of Manowara Bibi, councillor of Ward No. 3 of Naihati Municipality. The operation was conducted with assistance from police after officials became suspicious about unusually low electricity bills in the area.

According to officials, inspections were carried out on Ishak Sardar Road and in parts of the Hajinagar area, where electricity meters were examined for irregularities. During the operation, authorities allegedly found special devices attached to multiple meters that were designed to reduce recorded electricity consumption. Power supply to the identified properties was subsequently disconnected.

The electricity department also conducted inspections at several other houses on Patterson Road and Naihati Jute Mill Road. Officials alleged that different methods of electricity theft were detected at those locations as well. Complaints have reportedly been filed against the individuals concerned under relevant legal provisions, and a detailed investigation is underway.

Authorities further alleged that the councillor's son attempted to obstruct department personnel during the inspection. However, members of the councillor's family claimed that the arrangements had been made because residents were struggling with extreme heat conditions. No detailed response from the accused side regarding the allegations has been made public.

Officials explained that the alleged bypass method interrupts the meter's main circuit, causing actual electricity consumption to be recorded at a much lower level than usage. Local residents also alleged that the illegal connections had been affecting the electricity supply in the neighbourhood. Police are reportedly taking action against those accused of involvement in the alleged meter-tampering operation.
