Tragedy struck the Syrian coastal city of Latakia on Friday when a powerful explosion ripped through a mosque during the weekly congregational prayers. According to initial reports, at least 8 people were killed and dozens more were injured in what appears to be a targeted attack on the Alawite minority community. The blast occurred as worshippers were gathered inside the mosque, causing significant structural damage and sparking chaos in the high-security stronghold of the Syrian government.
The explosion targeted a community that forms the backbone of the current Syrian administration, led by President Bashar al-Assad. While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the carnage yet, security experts believe that insurgent factions or radical extremist groups are likely behind the attack.
Latakia, which has remained relatively stable compared to other parts of Syria during the long-standing conflict, is now on high alert as security forces have cordoned off the area to prevent further incidents.
