In a significant political development ahead of the Assembly elections, Prateek Bordoloi has withdrawn from the electoral race, a day after his father Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the Congress to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The decision has impacted the party’s strategy in the Margherita constituency.
Prateek, a political debutant, had been fielded by the Indian National Congress from Margherita, a seat previously represented by his father for four consecutive terms. In a letter addressed to party president Mallikarjun Kharge, he cited “changed circumstances” following his father’s decision and said it would be inappropriate for him to continue as a candidate.
Explaining his move, Prateek stated that continuing in the contest could create confusion among voters and party workers regarding his commitment and the party’s position. He emphasised that the people of Margherita and Congress supporters deserved clarity and confidence in the candidate representing them.
Despite stepping down, he affirmed his loyalty to the party, stating that he would continue to work for the Congress and the people of the constituency in any capacity assigned by the leadership. His decision comes amid a broader political churn triggered by his father’s defection.
Reacting to the development, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi expressed sympathy and support for Prateek, stating that the party respects his decision. The episode highlights the ripple effects of high-profile political switches on electoral dynamics ahead of the polls.
