The parents of Dr. Abhaya, the young doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital who was raped and murdered, have been denied a meeting with the President of India. On Thursday, they received a formal response from Rashtrapati Bhavan stating that a meeting was not possible at this time due to scheduling constraints. Weeks ago, they had emailed the President seeking an audience to demand justice for their daughter.
Abhaya’s parents expressed disappointment over the response, stating, “We did not expect such a reply from the President.” They had hoped for a more empathetic approach, especially from a woman President, given the nature of their appeal. The family has been vocal about their struggle for justice, repeatedly raising concerns over delays in the investigation and legal proceedings.
The development has sparked speculation about possible political factors affecting the case. Opposition leaders have questioned whether the central and state governments are working to shield Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from accountability. When asked about these allegations, Abhaya’s father cautiously remarked, “It’s possible. I won’t comment further, but perhaps the Chief Minister is under pressure.” The family has earlier accused the state government of inaction, claiming that the accused remain free due to political interference.
In their pursuit of justice, Abhaya’s parents recently met with CBI Director Praveen Sood in Delhi. Discussions focused on the status of the investigation, court proceedings at Sealdah Court, and concerns over the conduct of a CBI investigating officer. The family urged the agency to ensure a fair and thorough probe. The CBI has assured them that the investigation will continue as per legal procedures.
