Prince Harry triumphs as UK tabloid found guilty of phone hacking

Prince Harry on December 15, 2023, emerged victorious in a lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspapers, a major UK tabloid publisher. The London Court presided over by Judge Timothy Fancourt, found compelling evidence of illegal information-gathering practices, including phone hacking, employed by the publisher in its coverage of the royal.

The court awarded Prince Harry approximately £140,600 (roughly $180,000) in damages after determining that 15 out of 33 articles presented by Harry's legal team contained unlawfully obtained information.

During the trial, evidence revealed a timeline spanning from 2004 to 2009 during which Prince Harry's phone was targeted. The lawsuit asserted that journalists from The Mirror, The Sunday Mirror, and The Sunday People tabloids engaged in unauthorized access to the prince's voicemails and other illicit methods, causing him significant distress.

The court's decision sheds light on a disturbing chapter in media history, with the prince testifying that negative coverage, spanning from 1991 to 2011 when he was third in line to the British throne, eroded trust even within his inner circle.
