Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
A 55-year-old promoter, identified as Gopen Das, died by suicide in his Bediapara office in South Dumdum on Wednesday morning. He had reportedly been under heavy financial debt for a long time and was facing constant pressure from creditors. Neighbours also whispered about possible political pressure adding to his troubles, though local authorities have attributed the act solely to debt-related harassment.
According to police, Das’s office employees arrived around 10 am and were shocked to find him hanging. Authorities reached the spot soon after being informed, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination. Initial findings suggest death by hanging.
Family sources said Das is survived by his wife, Sampa Das, and a 20-year-old only daughter. His wife has been left deeply distressed, worried about their daughter’s future, and devastated by the sudden loss.
The incident has stirred grief in the local community, with residents calling it a grim reminder of the mental toll of prolonged financial and social pressure.
