Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
A protest was held outside the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) headquarters by residents evicted from under the Gariahat flyover. The demonstration was organised by the Gariahat Pathbasi Adhikar Raksha Committee, opposing what they called an illegal and inhumane eviction. Protesters first gathered near Gariahat Market before marching to the KMC office.
On June 25, the KMC carried out a coordinated eviction drive across multiple city locations to remove encroachments from roads and footpaths. The operation was jointly conducted by the Solid Waste Management and Social Sector departments along with Kolkata Police. Targeted areas included Park Circus Seven Point, Ballygunge, Gariahat, Mallick Bazar, Hazra More, and Baig Bagan. Officials stated that the occupants had constructed makeshift shelters using torn plastic sheets, broken plyboards, and tin pieces on public land.
According to KMC, the drive aimed to reclaim public spaces occupied over time by unauthorized residents. The cleared locations had seen the growth of temporary settlements, which were dismantled during the operation. No official comment was available on whether notices were served or alternative arrangements made for those evicted. Protesters demanded an immediate halt to evictions and protection of their right to shelter.
