A wave of protest swept through the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay as demonstrators rallied against Professor Sharmistha Saha and guest speaker Sudhanva Deshpande. The controversy emerged from a session under the academic course 'HS 835 Performance Theory & Praxis,' where the two individuals allegedly glorified terrorism and endorsed armed rebellion, specifically emphasizing the Palestinian struggle against Israel. Protesters, organized by the Vivek Vichar Manch, are calling for the arrest of the accused and a thorough investigation into the motives behind the contentious talk. The incident raises concerns about academic integrity and safety, with students claiming that such discussions promote ideologies linked to terrorism.
In a letter submitted to the police, students asserted that Professor Saha, belonging to the Humanities and Social Sciences department, misused her position to invite speakers like Deshpande, described as a "radical Leftist," for a virtual talk. The demonstrators are adamant about uncovering the motivations behind the November 6 talk and demand the immediate removal of Professor Saha from her position at IIT Bombay. This incident underscores the delicate balance between academic freedom and responsible discourse within educational institutions.
