Protest erupts in Gangarampur Municipality over unpaid wages; sanitation workers lock main gate

The municipal office premises of Gangarampur Municipality in West Bengal turned tense on Monday morning after sanitation workers locked the main gate in protest over alleged unpaid wages. The demonstration brought routine civic operations to a standstill, halting administrative activities and public service access at the office.

The protesting workers alleged that their salaries have been pending for several months, despite continuous service. They further stated that repeated requests and appeals made to the municipal authorities had not resulted in any resolution, leading to the escalation of their protest on Monday morning.

One of the protesting workers said, “We are struggling even to manage basic household expenses and daily needs. We will continue our struggle until our salaries are paid.” Following the gathering of workers, the main entrance gate of the municipality was locked, effectively blocking entry and exit from the premises.

Municipal operations were disrupted as residents arriving for services were affected by the closure. Administrative work inside the office remained halted as the situation developed. Local authorities have indicated that discussions and dialogue will be initiated to address the issue, while the workers have maintained their stance on continuing the agitation until their demands are met.
