Provide electoral bond details within 24 hrs: SC to SBI

In a significant development, the Supreme Court addressed the issue of electoral bonds, crucial donations to political parties, on Monday. The apex court issued stringent directives to the State Bank of India (SBI), mandating the provision of electoral bond details within 24 hours. SBI, entangled in the controversy, had previously petitioned for an extension until June 30 to furnish the information.

Today, the Supreme Court convenes to further deliberate on the electoral bond case, wherein SBI's plea for an extended deadline will be heard. Notably, the Supreme Court had earlier invalidated electoral bonds on February 15, deeming them unconstitutional. The current bench, led by Justice DY Chandrachud, seeks to address the constitutional concerns raised by both SBI's delay and the challenges presented by NGOs like ADR, who have petitioned the court citing contempt, questioning the legitimacy of SBI's requested extension.
