Putin, Trump hold 90-minute call on Iran war, Ukraine ceasefire and White House shooting

Russian President Vladimir Putin and United States President Donald Trump held a phone conversation lasting over 90 minutes, discussing key global issues including the ongoing Iran war, the Ukraine conflict and a recent shooting incident at a high-profile event linked to the White House. The call was described as “friendly and businesslike,” reflecting continued engagement between the two leaders despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.

During the conversation, Putin condemned the recent attempted attack at a Washington event attended by Trump, where an armed individual tried to breach security, triggering chaos before being taken into custody. He expressed support following the incident, which has raised serious concerns over security protocols at high-profile gatherings in the United States.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on the escalating conflict involving Iran. Putin supported Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire arrangement, while also sharing proposals related to Iran’s nuclear programme. He cautioned against any potential United States ground invasion, warning it could further destabilise the region, as both sides explored possible diplomatic pathways to de-escalation.

On the Ukraine conflict, Trump conveyed optimism that a deal could be within reach, while Putin reiterated Moscow’s position and accused Ukraine of using what he described as “terrorist methods.” The Russian leader also proposed a temporary ceasefire during upcoming Victory Day commemorations in May, a move that received a positive response during the call.

The leaders also discussed the possibility of future economic and energy cooperation, signalling efforts to keep communication channels open amid complex global challenges. The conversation comes at a time of heightened international tension, with multiple conflicts unfolding simultaneously and diplomatic engagement remaining a key factor in managing escalation.
