PV Sindhu wins Japan Open beating arch rival Yamaguchi; first Indian shuttler to do so

Indian badminton star PV Sindhu achieved a historic milestone by winning the prestigious Japan Open women's singles title. She became the first Indian to win the tournament. In a highly anticipated final match, Sindhu defeated her long-time rival Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in straight games with a scoreline of 21-17, 21-17. This high-octane clash marked the 30th career meeting between the two iconic shuttlers on the international badminton court, shifting their head-to-head record to 16-14 in the Indian player's favor.

The victory holds immense significance for Sindhu as it marks her very first BWF 750 tier tournament title. This victory stands out as her first major World Tour title since her victory at the Syed Modi International tournament in 2024. Furthermore, this victory represents Sindhu's first major international title won outside of India in four years, following her last overseas tournament victory at the Singapore Open in 2022.

The comprehensive win over the reigning world champion on Yamaguchi's own home soil is expected to provide a substantial boost to Sindhu's global standing. After experiencing a dip in form earlier this year that pushed her ranking down to world number 18, Sindhu successfully fought her way back into the elite bracket to secure the world number 9 spot. Defeating the world champion in the final will now pave the way for her to advance even higher in the upcoming BWF world rankings.
