QR tickets fail, automatic gates malfunction in Kolkata Metro leading to passengers woes

Kolkata Metro commuters are facing difficulties due to technical issues with the newly introduced paper QR code-based tickets. Many passengers have reported that the automatic gates are failing to open despite correctly scanning their tickets, leading to long queues and missed trains. The problem is particularly severe during office hours, with the highest number of complaints coming from the North-South Metro corridor. The introduction of paper QR tickets has replaced the earlier token system, but commuters claim that these tickets are frequently unrecognized by the scanners.

The ticketing system requires passengers to scan their paper QR tickets at entry and exit gates, but several stations have reported malfunctions. Some gates are working correctly, while others fail to recognize the QR code, causing congestion at station exits. Metro authorities have acknowledged that issues arise when the ticket is folded, dirty, or not aligned properly with the scanner. Commuters say the problem is inconsistent, occurring more frequently during peak hours, particularly between 9 AM and 10 AM.

A senior Metro official stated, “The problem mainly arises due to ticket misalignment, folding, or dirt. However, passengers using mobile QR codes are not facing any issues.” Passengers have expressed frustration over the delays, with some missing their scheduled trains due to repeated scanning failures. Long queues at entry and exit gates have added to the inconvenience, with commuters calling for urgent improvements in the ticketing system.

Metro authorities have assured that the issue is under review and corrective measures are being taken. Awareness campaigns will be conducted to educate passengers on handling tickets properly to avoid scanning failures. Some stations have already started addressing minor glitches, while passengers are being advised to use smart cards or mobile QR codes for a smoother experience. Metro officials claim that most gates are functioning correctly, but passengers insist that recurring problems must be resolved to prevent further disruptions.

Passengers traveling during peak hours continue to report difficulties, with many suggesting improvements to the scanning mechanism. Complaints have increased in recent weeks, with commuters urging authorities to implement a more reliable system. The Metro administration has not announced any immediate changes but has assured that ongoing investigations will help identify and fix technical faults affecting gate operations.
