A former soldier working as a permanent security guard at Rabindra Bharati University has alleged caste- and religion-based harassment. The security guard claimed that he was assaulted on campus due to his caste and religion. Instead of prosecuting the culprits, they were verbally reprimanded at the university’s BT Road campus and then transferred to Jorasanko.
The security guard stated that on February 11, he received information that a canteen operator on campus was involved in drug trafficking. He stopped the man and searched his bag, but found nothing. Immediately afterward, a group of university students and staff, along with some outsiders, allegedly attacked him. He was slapped and subjected to caste- and religion-based abuse. He was also forced to write something under pressure.
The incident reportedly involves Trinamool Chhatra Parishad leader Devgopal Das. However, Devgopal has denied the allegations and stated, "Authorities should investigate the matter." Interim Vice-Chancellor Shubhra Kamal Mukherjee said, "The entire matter will be investigated!"
