Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has renewed his “vote chori” allegations from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, asserting that a clean voter roll is essential for free and fair polls. Posting on X, Gandhi said, “Vote chori is an attack on the foundational idea of ‘one man, one vote’,” urging the Election Commission to release digital voter rolls for public audit.
His comments came a day after the Election Commission of India issued a statement asking him to either submit a formal declaration under the rules or apologise for what it called “false” allegations regarding the voter list. The Congress leader linked his stand to the broader fight to protect democracy.
Meanwhile, the Congress party has scheduled a meeting on August 11 with its general secretaries, in-charges, and frontal organisation heads to plan a nationwide campaign against “voter list manipulation and election fraud.” The party is also opposing the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, with the INDIA bloc partners joining the protest.
