Rahul Gandhi disqualified as MP after conviction in 'Modi Surname' case

On Friday, the Lok Sabha Secretariat announced that Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress party, has been disqualified as a Member of Parliament from the date of his conviction in a criminal defamation case.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s membership from Lok Sabha has been terminated after he was convicted and handed a two-year imprisonment sentence by the Surat District Court on Thursday in a defamation case over his “how come all thieves have Modi as their common surname” remarks.

According to sources, Gandhi's comments were deemed defamatory by the court, leading to his conviction and subsequent disqualification.

Gandhi's disqualification from the Lok Sabha is a significant blow to the Congress party, as he was one of their most high-profile and influential members. The party has not yet issued a statement on the matter, but many are speculating about the impact of Gandhi's absence from Parliament on their future political prospects.
