In a significant drug haul, the Malda Government Railway Police (GRP) seized 900 bottles of Phensidyl syrup, a banned substance, from platform number one of Malda Town station. Acting on a tip-off, the GRP conducted a raid and recovered the large consignment of the syrup, valued at approximately Rs 1.90 lakh. Three individuals, all residents of Bihar, have been arrested in connection with the seizure.
The consignment of Phensidyl syrup was being transported from Delhi to Malda, according to preliminary police investigations. The accused, identified as residents of Bihar, were reportedly preparing to transport the bottles further to Balurghat. Police believe the ultimate destination was the Heeli border, from where the drugs would have been smuggled into Bangladesh. The arrested men have been presented in the Malda District Court.
The GRP officers discovered the drugs hidden in five large luggage bags. The haul highlights the ongoing issue of drug trafficking along key railway stations in West Bengal, with Malda Town station serving as a crucial point for drug smugglers attempting to move contraband across state and national borders.
The Malda GRP has launched a deeper investigation into the smuggling ring and the routes used by traffickers. Authorities are also focusing on identifying other individuals involved in the operation and how the smuggling network connects Delhi, Malda, Balurghat, and beyond.
The arrested men will face charges related to drug trafficking and smuggling, while police continue their search for further clues that may lead to the dismantling of the larger trafficking network.
This seizure marks a major step in the fight against illegal drugs in the region, with Malda police authorities reinforcing their commitment to curbing such illegal activities.
