Mamata Banerjee releases song for Chhath Puja, played at ghats across Bengal
Heavy overnight rainfall caused multiple landslides in Darjeeling on Thursday, resulting in the tragic death of 78-year-old Raghubeer Rai from Sukhia Block. The landslides severely impacted the Darjeeling-Singtam Road and Rock Garden Road, leading to the complete closure of traffic towards Rock Garden. The blockage has caused significant disruption to travel in the area.
Following the incident, the local Block Development Officer (BDO) and police officials rushed to assess the damage and assist the affected villagers. Administrative sources confirmed that the deceased's family will receive financial compensation per government regulations.
Meanwhile, weather forecasts indicate more heavy rainfall in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, which raises further concerns about additional landslides and floods. In response, the water level of the Teesta River is being closely monitored, as it continues to rise due to the downpour. To prevent flooding, a new embankment is being constructed along the banks of the Teesta River near Chamakdangi village, where the road has already been submerged.
Authorities are advising residents and travelers to exercise caution as the situation remains critical, with the possibility of more landslides and flooding in the coming days.
