Reconstruction of crime scene in Kasba as probe intensifies in Kolkata college student rape case
A man named Nirmal Vijay, a resident of Rajasthan, has been arrested by Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police for allegedly extorting over ₹1 crore from a Salt Lake resident using a fake “digital arrest” claim. The complaint was filed by Shambhunath Chaudhuri, a resident of DL Block, Salt Lake, who received a call from an unknown number in which the caller posed as a high-ranking police official.
The caller informed Chaudhuri that he had been “digitally arrested” and instructed him not to leave his house or contact any relatives. Over a span of four days, through repeated intimidation, the caller allegedly made Chaudhuri transfer money in phases, amounting to a total loss of over ₹1 crore. Realizing the nature of the fraud, the victim filed a written complaint at Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station in September 2024.
Based on technical surveillance and investigation, police identified and located the accused in the Nagerbazar area. He was taken into custody and is currently being interrogated. Investigators are verifying whether the accused acted alone or was part of a larger network. Further probe is underway to trace the money trail and possible links to similar cases.
