Rajat Kumar, the man who saved Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant after his car accident, attempted suicide along with his girlfriend, Manu Kashyap, after their families opposed their relationship due to caste differences. The incident took place in February in Buchha Basti, Muzaffarnagar. While 21-year-old Manu died during treatment, 25-year-old Rajat remains in critical condition at a private hospital in Roorkee.
According to police, the couple consumed poison after learning that their families had arranged their marriages elsewhere. No formal complaint has been filed by either family, but the police have launched an investigation. Muzaffarnagar Superintendent of Police Satyanarayan Prajapat stated, “Further legal action will be taken based on evidence that emerges in the course of the investigation.”
Manu’s family has accused Rajat of kidnapping and poisoning her, following which a case has been registered. Authorities are examining all angles, including the family's claims and the circumstances leading up to the incident. The exact sequence of events is being verified through witness statements and forensic reports.
Rajat gained national attention in December 2022 when he and his friend, Nishu Kumar, rescued Rishabh Pant after his Mercedes crashed into a divider and caught fire near Roorkee. The two men, who worked at a nearby factory, pulled Pant from the burning vehicle and arranged for emergency medical assistance. Pant later expressed gratitude and gifted them scooters in recognition of their bravery.
The police are continuing their probe into the suicide attempt, with further action expected based on investigation findings. Officials have urged people to report any new information regarding the case. Rajat remains under medical observation, and his condition is being closely monitored.
