The West Bengal government, in a major reshuffle, on Monday appointed IPS Rajeev Kumar as the new DGP of the state. This marks his return to the post. He was appointed as the DGP in December 2023 after the retirement of Manoj Malaviya. However, in March 2024, the Election Commission removed Rajeev Kumar from the post ahead of the Lok Sabha election.
Following this, a bypoll followed due to which the order from Nabanna was pending. Rajeev Kumar has been asked to join the post with immediate effect. Meanwhile, IPS Sanjay Mukherjee has been removed from the DGP post and is now posted as the new Fire DG.
Previously, Rajeev Kumar has served as the chief of Kolkata Police and Bidhannagar Police. He also headed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Special Task Force (STF), and served as the principal secretary of the department of information technology and electronics.
