Another KMC councillor, Biswajit Mondal arrested, after woman alleges molestation and threats
Ramps are being constructed at all Kolkata Police Stations to ensure easy access for senior citizens and specially-abled persons, following the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata. The initiative aims to make police stations more accessible so that vulnerable sections can approach the Duty Officer without physical barriers.
Officials said the move is not merely an infrastructure upgrade but a necessary step to ensure justice, dignity, and inclusivity. For elderly citizens and persons with disabilities, a police station is often the first point of contact to seek help or report grievances. Lack of accessibility, they noted, can effectively prevent them from accessing legal remedies.
The need has been felt particularly by elderly persons and those using walkers or canes, who face a high risk of injury while negotiating steep or uneven staircases. Properly designed ramps provide smoother, safer, and slip-resistant access, reducing the chances of accidents within police premises.
At present, out of 80 police stations under Kolkata Police, ramps were initially available at 25 locations. Work was taken up to cover the remaining 55 stations to ensure uniform accessibility across the city.
According to the latest update, construction has already been completed at 35 police stations, while work is currently in progress at the remaining 20 stations. Authorities said the pending work will be completed very soon, ensuring that all police stations are fully accessible.
