Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has announced that 11 seats at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will remain permanently empty as a tribute to fans who lost their lives in a tragic stampede last year. The decision was revealed by RCB CEO Rajesh Menon ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season, marking a symbolic gesture to honour the victims.
The stampede occurred on June 4, 2025, outside the stadium during celebrations following RCB’s maiden IPL title victory. Massive crowds gathered for the celebrations, leading to overcrowding that resulted in the deaths of 11 fans and injuries to dozens of others. Menon said the empty seats will remain unsold during all domestic and international matches played at the venue. The franchise described the gesture as a way to ensure that the memories of the supporters who died remain a permanent part of the stadium and the team’s history.
RCB will also pay tribute in other ways during the season. Players are expected to wear black armbands during matches and sport jersey number 11 during practice sessions as a mark of respect for the fans who died in the tragedy.
