Red alert issued for Sundarbans as low-pressure system threatens South Bengal

A red alert has been issued across the Sundarbans coast following the formation of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, with the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds from Friday. The administration has temporarily banned deep-sea fishing and directed all fishermen already at sea to return to port immediately. According to the forecast, wind speeds of 50 to 60 kmph are expected, with the possibility of stronger gusts in some areas.

The administration intensified precautionary measures in the Fraserganj coastal region of South 24 Parganas. Police from Fraserganj Coastal Police Station conducted patrols using speedboats and carried out public announcements along river ghats, creeks, and major fishing routes, instructing fishermen not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve. Officials stated that the strengthening low-pressure system could bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gale-force winds across several districts of South Bengal.

Authorities have increased surveillance at coastal ghats and are conducting regular river patrols to ensure compliance with the fishing ban. Residents of coastal areas have been advised to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms and refrain from visiting rivers or the sea unnecessarily. The administration is also coordinating with fishermen's families to facilitate the safe return of trawlers operating at sea.
