Kolkata Police has announced extensive traffic restrictions, road closures and diversion plans in connection with the observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga on Red Road on June 21. The restrictions will remain in force from June 14 to June 21, as and when considered necessary, to prevent danger, obstruction and inconvenience to the public during the event and its preparatory activities.
As part of the arrangements, Red Road has been closed for all vehicular movement from 10:00 p.m. on June 14 until the conclusion of the programme on June 21. Guru Nanak Sarani (Mayo Road) will remain closed to all vehicles, except cars carrying specially issued programme stickers, from 2:00 a.m. on June 21 until the event concludes. Movement of all categories of goods vehicles will also be restricted from 2:00 a.m. on June 21 along several major routes, including stretches of AJC Bose Road, St. Georges Gate Road, Strand Road, C.R. Avenue and Jawaharlal Nehru Road.
Several roads will remain closed to vehicular traffic from 2:00 a.m. on June 21 until the programme is over. These include Hospital Road East and West, Hospital Road, Lovers Lane, Casuarina Avenue, Khidderpore Road from Ghora Pass to J and N Island, R.R. Avenue between Y Road Tram Track and Government Place West, Gostha Pal Sarani (Kingsway), Queensway, Plassey Gate Road, Dufferin Road, Outram Road, Esplanade Ramp and the southbound carriageway of R.R. Avenue from Esplanade Row East.
To manage traffic flow during the closure of Red Road, Kolkata Police has issued a detailed diversion plan. Northbound vehicles from Red Road will be diverted through Outram Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road or via Dufferin Road and Mayo Road. Buses bound for Dalhousie and Howrah from Zeerat Bridge may be redirected through Belvedere Road, AJC Bose Road, Turf View, AJC Ramp, St. Georges Gate Road and Strand Road. Southbound vehicles will be diverted through Mayo Road and Dufferin Road or through Government Place East, Esplanade Row East and Jawaharlal Nehru Road.
Police have also stated that additional diversions may be imposed on arterial and feeder roads on June 21 depending on traffic conditions and operational requirements. The notification further clarifies that these restrictions will remain in force in addition to all other normal traffic regulations applicable on the day.
