The Calcutta High Court on Thursday scrutinized the police's handling of the arrest of Sandeshkhali BJP leader Mampi Das, questioning the legal basis for her detention directing "her release from jail."
In court, Das’s lawyer argued that the initial notice contained only bailable sections, and it was only later that non-bailable sections were added. The lawyer also claimed that the police failed to submit the case diary to the lower court. "There was no non-bailable clause in the notice posted on Mampi Das's house. But arrest occured on May 14 was under non-bailable clause," argued Das' lawyer.
Piyali Das alias Mampi Das, surrendered at Basirhat sub-divisional court, which remanded her to an eight day judicial custody after an FIR lodged by Sandeshkhali Police in connection with browbeating a homemaker into signing on a blank paper of an alleged rape being committed on her by Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides.
However, a sting video circulating on social media showed the woman denying the rape allegation, stating that Das had threatened her into signing the document.
