Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal, experienced much-needed relief from the scorching heat on Friday afternoon as rain showers finally arrived. The temperature in Kolkata dropped by approximately 6 degrees Celsius within just two and a half hours of rainfall.
Prior to the rain, Kolkata had been enduring sweltering conditions, with the maximum temperature reaching a scorching 36.7 degrees Celsius. However, after the rain showers, the maximum temperature dropped to around 31 degrees Celsius by 5:30 pm. The rainfall brought much relief to the city, providing respite from the oppressive heat that had persisted for nearly two weeks.
The rain was not limited to Kolkata alone but also extended to some areas of Salt Lake, North 24 Parganas, and Howrah. This brought temporary relief to the residents from the stifling humidity and allowed them to enjoy a brief respite from the scorching weather.
The Alipore Meteorological Department had previously predicted rainfall in various regions, including North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Birbhum, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Kolkata. As anticipated, dark clouds loomed in the sky, and rain started falling from around 2:45 pm, providing much-needed relief to the parched land.
Meanwhile, the Alipore Meteorological Department also informed that the monsoon is expected to arrive in North Bengal by Monday. Pre-monsoon showers have already begun in the hilly areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Furthermore, it has been forecasted that Alipurduar, Coochbehar, and Jalpaiguri may experience heavy rainfall from the 11th to the 15th, with precipitation of up to 200 mm within 24 hours.
On the other hand, the people of South Bengal will have to wait a little longer for the monsoon rains. The heatwave is expected to persist in the southern districts until the 13th of the month. Therefore, residents in these areas can anticipate rainfall only after the 13th. In the meantime, the weather in Kolkata and surrounding regions is likely to remain unsettled and humid.
