Report on 'One Nation, One Election' submitted to president Draupadi Murmu

The committee spearheading the 'One Nation, One Election' initiative, led by former President Ramnath Kovind, has submitted its comprehensive report to President of India, Draupadi Murmu. This committee formed by the Central Government also includes Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, 15th Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh and former Lok Sabha General Secretary Subhash Kashyap.

The report highlights the adverse impact of staggered elections on the economy, politics, and society, advocating for simultaneous Lok Sabha, Assembly, Municipal, and Panchayat elections. While advocating 'one country, one election', the committee has referred to the decision of the Supreme Court in the Kesavananda Bharati vs Kerala Government case. The court had said in its decision, “It is not possible to keep the society in bondage. Society grows. His needs change. The Constitution and laws may have to be changed to conform to those needs. No one generation can bind the next generation. Therefore, every wisely drafted Constitution provides for its own amendment.''

BJP and its allies have extended their support to holding simultaneous elections. At the same time, Congress and its allies – DMK, NCP and TMC have opposed it.
