Resolution on recognition of Sarna code likely in Bengal assembly on Friday

The West Bengal government has decided to propose a resolution in the state assembly to recognize Sari and Sarna religions, in an attempt to pacify tribal communities ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections. The resolution will be discussed under Article 185 and will be moved on Friday. This decision was made during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee in the chamber of Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee on Thursday.

For the past few months, members of the tribal community have been agitating for the recognition of the Sarna religion. They have warned of a large-scale agitation if their demands are not met. As a result, the state government has begun considering this decision.

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Sobhandev Chatterjee, had previously announced the proposal, but it was not considered by the minute's committee due to the non-presentation of the budget. Now that the budget has been presented, a decision has been made to bring the proposal forward.

Furthermore, a resolution against the partition of Bengal may also be proposed in the assembly on the following Monday. The Chief Minister will return to Kolkata on Saturday after visiting Junglemahal, after which the resolution may be brought forward. In 2017, a resolution against the partition of Bengal was passed, with the Left-Congress supporting the proposal and three BJP MLAs opposing it.

According to BJP sources, the Leader of the Opposition, Shubhendu Adhikari, may participate in the discussion on the resolution against the partition of Bengal on Monday.
