Respite in Bengal but India sizzles under severe heatwave, many cities record over 46 degrees

As large swathes of India continue to battle an unrelenting heatwave, temperatures in several regions have soared past the 46-degree Celsius mark. Akola in Maharashtra recorded the country's highest temperature at a blistering 46.9°C, while Rajasthan’s Barmer and Jaisalmer also registered extreme heat, with mercury levels hovering around 46.4°C and 46°C respectively. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for severe heatwave conditions across North and Central India, impacting states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, where residents are facing harsh, dry conditions.

In contrast, West Bengal is finally seeing signs of relief after days of sweltering heat. The regional weather office has forecast a shift in weather patterns, with light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds expected across the state throughout the coming week. While hot and humid conditions may linger briefly in some western districts, the IMD predicts a gradual fall in maximum temperatures by 3-4°C over the next five days, offering much-needed respite to the residents of Kolkata and surrounding areas.

Despite the localized relief in Bengal, the overall national situation remains concerning, with heatwave conditions expected to persist in isolated pockets of central and northwest India for at least another 48 hours. Authorities have advised citizens in affected regions to remain cautious, avoid peak-hour outdoor exposure, and follow heat action plans as the country navigates this intense summer spell. The forecast suggests that a more widespread cooling trend may begin later in the week as atmospheric conditions shift.
