Flames rip through illegal warehouse in Burrabazar | Watch Taaza TV's report
In a significant development in the RG Kar rape and murder case, the Calcutta High Court has made strong observations, stating that the convicted accused Sanjay Roy “knows a lot” and may need to be re-interrogated. The bench of Justices Rajasekhar Mantha and Rai Chattopadhyay directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to proceed with further questioning if required and not hesitate in advancing the investigation.
During the hearing, the court emphasised that any individual connected to the case could be interrogated again if necessary. It also instructed the CBI to examine newly submitted evidence, including DNA profiles and audio recordings provided by the victim’s family, and submit a detailed report. The court underlined the importance of using modern investigative techniques and conducting a thorough forensic analysis to ensure no aspect of the case remains unexplored.
The bench also questioned the state’s objection to the victim’s family revisiting the crime scene, noting that the CBI had no such reservations. Justice Mantha remarked that if the family files a fresh affidavit and the investigating agency is willing to proceed, there should be no obstruction. The court further drew parallels with a past student death case at IIT Kharagpur, where forensic examination later revealed it to be a murder, highlighting the need for deeper scrutiny in the present case.
The case, which was earlier being heard suo motu by the Supreme Court of India, was later transferred to the high court for further proceedings. The next hearing has been scheduled for May 12, as the court continues to monitor developments closely while ensuring a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the matter.
