RG Kar Case: Junior doctors received ₹3.5 Crore donation out of which ₹1.94 crore remains unused

In a strong move towards transparency, junior doctors associated with the RG Kar Medical College protest have made the financial details of their movement public. The declaration was made at a mass convention held on Wednesday, where the family of the deceased medical student—whose tragic rape and murder during duty hours sparked the state-wide agitation—was also present.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front (WBJDF), one of the three organisations leading the protest, revealed that they received donations totaling over ₹3.5 crore between September 13, 2024, and March 31, 2025. These funds came from supporters across the state who stood in solidarity with the movement.

According to the audit report presented at the convention, WBJDF received ₹2,61,9013 and spent ₹31,86,334. Approximately ₹1.94 crore remains unused. The remaining amount, they said, will be used in future plans aligned with the movement’s cause. The launch of the WBJDF's official website also took place on Wednesday, further establishing an online presence to ensure open communication and updates.

Expenditure details include ₹4,59,921 on setting up and maintaining the hunger strike platform, ₹2.5 lakh on meetings, ₹44,000 on developing their website and app, ₹1.92 lakh on organizing the Abhaya Clinic, and a significant ₹19.90 lakh on legal proceedings.

The release of this balance sheet comes in response to allegations made by several individuals, including some from the ruling party, questioning the source and use of the funds. Accusations also surfaced suggesting that money may have entered the movement through hawala channels. In reply, the junior doctors clarified that every transaction has been accounted for, and their decision to release the audit is aimed at maintaining full transparency and public trust.
