RG Kar convict Sanjay Roy seeks acquittal in HC; Hearing set for July 16

Sanjay Roy, convicted in the rape and murder of a medical student at RG Kar Medical College, has filed an appeal before the Calcutta High Court seeking acquittal. In January 2025, the Sealdah Court sentenced Roy, a dismissed civic volunteer, to life imprisonment in connection with the incident that occurred on August 9, 2024. The appeal was officially filed on June 17, and the hearing is scheduled for July 16 before the division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak.

The lower court had found Roy guilty under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code related to rape and murder. Following the verdict, Roy’s lawyer Senjuti Chakraborty stated, “We will move the higher court. Any convicted individual has the right to appeal in the higher court. We will take time to plan this appeal.” She added, “We believe Sanjay is a victim. We will definitely go to the High Court. It is our right. We will approach the High Court to secure his acquittal.”

The incident at RG Kar Medical College, in which a doctor-student was found raped and murdered, had led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of Sanjay Roy, who was then working as a civic volunteer. The case was tried in a fast-track court in Sealdah, which delivered its judgment after months of proceedings. The upcoming High Court hearing marks the next legal development in the case as it nears its one-year mark.
