The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has become a focal point of tension after the tragic discovery of a junior doctor's semi-naked body in the seminar hall on Friday morning. The incident has sparked a heated response from students and staff, leading to an ongoing strike and a high-level investigation.
An 11-member investigation committee has been promptly formed to look into the circumstances surrounding the death. The committee includes senior faculty members, such as Dr. Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, Dean of Student Affairs, and heads of various departments including Radiotherapy, Medicine, Anatomy, and Psychiatry. Additionally, several postgraduate trainees (PGTs) and interns are also part of the investigative team.
The incident has caused significant unrest among the students, particularly PGTs, who have announced a strike, refusing to participate in outdoor duties. However, emergency services at the hospital continue to operate. The students are demanding that the hospital principal, Sandeep Ghosh, address the situation on the ground. The principal's delayed arrival has further fueled the anger among the students.
Health Secretary Ushma visited the hospital premises and expressed concern over the lack of CCTV coverage in the seminar hall area. The investigation will also probe why such critical areas within the hospital premises were not under surveillance. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased junior doctor remains at the scene, with students insisting that it should not be moved until the principal arrives.
The deceased's father has claimed that his daughter's body was found in a humiliating condition, still lying under a table in the seminar hall. This has led to an outcry among the students and further intensified the situation at the hospital.
In response to the gravity of the incident, hospital authorities have summoned all doctors and staff from the respiratory medicine department who were on duty the previous night to assist in the investigation. Some have already been called to the health building for questioning.
