Two junior doctors in West Bengal have resumed duty at their new rural postings following a recent transfer order, while a third doctor has opted to challenge the move in court. The appointments were made by the state health department, which directed the doctors to join as senior residents at district hospitals.
According to the order, Dr. Debashish Haldar was posted to Gazole Medical College in Malda, Dr. Ashfaqulla Naiya to Deben Mahato Medical College in Purulia, and Dr. Aniket Mahato to Raiganj Medical College. All three initially opposed the transfers and had not joined their assigned posts, expressing dissatisfaction with the appointments.
Dr. Debashish Haldar and Dr. Ashfaqulla Naiya have now reported to duty. Speaking on the matter, Dr. Haldar said, “We have decided to return to work so that the local people do not face any inconvenience. We also want to show that this movement is not just about doctors but also about common people.”
Despite resuming work, both Dr. Haldar and Dr. Naiya have filed a legal petition against the transfer. Their lawyer, Shamim Ahmed, submitted the plea in Calcutta High Court. The hearing is expected to take place before the regular bench on June 5.
Dr. Aniket Mahato has not reported to Raiganj Medical College and continues to oppose the posting. According to Dr. Haldar, “Aniket will continue the legal fight without returning to work.” The three doctors had earlier expressed concerns about the transfer process and its impact on their service conditions.
