A tragic industrial accident rocked Bahraich district on Friday morning when a rice mill dryer exploded around 7 AM, killing five workers and critically injuring three others. At the time of the incident, about 15 to 17 labourers were inside the facility, engaged in drying paddy.
The explosion was followed by a fierce fire and rapid smoke accumulation inside the mill. Workers collapsed from suffocation as the facility turned into a death trap. Nearby residents, alerted by screams, rushed in and helped evacuate the unconscious workers.
All victims were taken to the district hospital where five were declared dead on arrival. The remaining three, suffering from severe smoke inhalation, were referred to the medical college for critical care. District Magistrate Monica Rani visited both the accident site and the hospital to take stock of the situation and ensure proper treatment for the injured.
Eyewitness Lavkush, a worker from Shravasti, described the terrifying moments after the dryer exploded. “We were drying paddy when the blast occurred. Smoke filled the entire building. People began falling unconscious. I ran to save my life and called for help,” he said.
The deceased include Gaffar Ali (40), Bablu (28), and Rajnesh (35) from Kannauj; Hoor (50) from Shravasti; and Bittu Shah (30) from Bihar. Another victim, Vinod from Ghulam Ali Pura, was also among the dead. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the incident, while Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep condolences and directed officials to ensure top-quality medical treatment for the injured.
