Rishabh Pant ruled out from NZ series due to injury, Dhruv Jurel replaces him

In a significant setback for Team India just ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, premier wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out due to a side strain. The injury occurred during a practice session on Saturday at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara. According to the BCCI, Pant experienced sharp discomfort in his right abdominal area while batting. Subsequent MRI scans revealed an oblique muscle tear, necessitating a period of rest and rehabilitation, thus ending his involvement in the series before the first ball was bowled.

The Men’s Selection Committee acted promptly to name star youngster Dhruv Jurel as Pant's replacement. Jurel’s inclusion comes on the back of his exceptional performance in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. The right-handed batter has been in the form of his life, racking up six fifty-plus scores in just seven innings, which includes two towering centuries. His ability to anchor the innings and finish games under pressure made him the unanimous choice to fill the void left by Pant.

Jurel has already joined the squad in Vadodara and will serve as the backup wicketkeeping option to KL Rahul, who is expected to don the gloves in the playing XI. While Jurel might have to wait for his debut cap, his presence adds significant tactical depth and youthful energy to the middle order. The selection reflects BCCI's intent to reward domestic consistency and build a robust bench strength for the 50-over format heading into the 2027 World Cup cycle.

The updated Indian squad remains a blend of experience and youth under the captaincy of Shubman Gill. With stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning, and Shreyas Iyer taking over vice-captaincy duties, India looks formidable despite the loss of Pant. The bowling department, led by Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav, will aim to exploit the home conditions in Vadodara as the series kicks off this Sunday.
