UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faced a wave of criticism on social media after sporting Adidas Samba sneakers during a recent interview at 10 Downing Street. Users and fashion enthusiasts alike expressed disappointment, suggesting that Sunak's choice of footwear was not fitting for the occasion, asserting that "he had ruined it for everyone".
During the interview, which focused on Sunak's government tax policies, the 43-year-old leader was seen donning the grey, white, and black sneakers from the well-known German sportswear brand. He paired the Samba shoes with a white shirt, navy chinos, and black socks.
Adidas describes the Samba as a "legendary shoe with a rich history," traditionally considered trendy and fashionable. However, many footwear enthusiasts felt that Sunak's attempt to appear trendy had somewhat tarnished the shoe's reputation.
Following the online backlash, Sunak issued a "fullsome apology," acknowledging the misstep in his choice of footwear. He expressed regret, stating, "I issue a fullsome apology to the Samba community. But, in my defense, I would say I have been wearing Adidas trainers, including Sambas — and others, in fact — for many, many years."
