Howrah police arrest two men for extorting money from Manglahat traders
Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee visited the family of the 12-year-old minor girl allegedly raped and murdered in Baruipur on Tuesday, amid ongoing protests and political activity in the area. Upon reaching the victim’s residence, local residents surrounded his vehicle and raised slogans of “Thief, thief” against him. Protesters expressed anger over the delay, questioning why the MP, whose area is adjacent, took two days to visit despite the proximity. A protester highlighted that many people from farther areas had already come earlier.
The visit by Ritabrata Banerjee and other rebel TMC leaders, including former minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, came a day after a Kalighat TMC delegation met the family. The group faced initial police restrictions before being allowed to proceed. They met the victim’s father and discussed the case, demanding maximum punishment for the culprits and measures to prevent recurrence of such crimes. Ritabrata’s visit is seen as part of efforts by rebel factions to engage with the grieving family independently.
The Baruipur incident has triggered widespread outrage and multiple political visits. Three accused have been arrested, while one suspect died in mob lynching. The case has become a flashpoint, with criticism directed at various political groups over delayed responses and past handling of similar crimes. Ritabrata Banerjee’s arrival drew sharp local reaction, and comes ahead of West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari's planned visit to the grieving family.
