Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
The political landscape of West Bengal shifted dramatically on Wednesday as Speaker Rathindranath Ghosh officially recognized Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition. This recognition comes after a group of 58 rebel MLAs submitted a signed letter of support, meeting the two-thirds majority requirement necessary to claim the "real ownership" of the Trinamool legislative party. Ritabrata, addressing the media at the Legislative Assembly, declared that the era of servants and singular leaders is over, replaced by a collective team of 58 legislators ready to function as a formidable opposition.
The collapse of the original Trinamool structure followed a period of intense internal turmoil, specifically a scandal involving forged signatures for the nomination of the previous opposition leader. Ritabrata and Sandipan Saha, who were expelled for speaking out against party corruption, successfully consolidated the rebels to prove their legislative strength. Along with Ritabrata’s appointment, Akhruzzaman has been named Chief Whip, while Javed Khan, Sabina Yasmin, Shiuli Saha, and Sandipan Saha have been appointed as deputy party leaders.
Despite the split, Ritabrata extended a surprising olive branch by suggesting that Mamata Banerjee should remain in an "advisor" role. He emphasized that while his group will keep a strict eye on the government and oppose it when necessary, they are also prepared to appreciate positive governmental actions. This move effectively sidelines the original party leadership while attempting to retain the ideological legacy of the Trinamool movement under a new administrative banner.
The fight for the party's identity is far from over, as the battle now moves toward the Election Commission. While the Speaker has settled the legislative leadership, the rights to the party’s name, symbol, and assets will require a verification process involving all MPs and office bearers. For now, the keys to the opposition office have been handed to Ritabrata, marking the beginning of a new, fractured phase for the party Mamata Banerjee spent decades building.
