Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was rushed to Delhi on Wednesday after a sudden deterioration in his health due to rising blood sugar levels. He was receiving treatment at his residence, ‘Rabri Awaas,’ in Patna before doctors advised immediate hospitalization at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for advanced medical care. He is expected to be admitted under the supervision of a team of specialists.
According to party sources, Yadav had been unwell for the past two days, but his condition worsened significantly on Wednesday morning, prompting an urgent decision to shift him to Delhi. His family members, including his daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Misa Bharti, are accompanying him. Supporters and party leaders have expressed concern over his health, while RJD members continue to monitor updates closely.
Yadav, 76, has a history of severe health complications. In 2022, he underwent a kidney transplant in Singapore, where his daughter Rohini Acharya donated a kidney to him. In 2014, he underwent open-heart surgery, and in September 2024, he underwent angioplasty in Mumbai, where doctors placed a stent in his heart. His medical history includes chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and heart-related ailments, requiring frequent medical supervision.
Meanwhile, in Delhi, Yadav is expected to stay at the government residence of his daughter Misa Bharti. He is also scheduled to meet RJD MPs regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill, which is being introduced in the Lok Sabha today. His party has been vocal in its opposition to the bill, and discussions on further strategy are expected.
The Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 has drawn strong reactions, with the government calling it a reformative step, while opposition parties, including the RJD, claim it infringes on constitutional and religious rights. The bill proposes changes in the management of Waqf properties, which currently include over 800,000 acres of land across India. Yadav had recently participated in a protest against the bill in Patna on March 26, alongside Tejashwi Yadav, where he criticized the central government’s approach to the legislation.
