RPF seize over 10 lakh cash near Howrah goods yard, 1 detained

Railway Protection Force (RPF) intercepted and seized over Rs 10 lakh in unaccounted cash from an individual near the Howrah Goods Yard on April 25. The operation was part of a special preventive drive aimed at curbing the illegal transportation of contraband items, including gold, silver, and liquid cash, through the railway area.

The incident unfolded at approximately 1:30 PM when an alert RPF team patrolling the Chandmari Bridge area spotted a man behaving in a highly suspicious manner. Upon approaching and searching his belongings, officers discovered a large sum of Indian currency inside his bag. The individual, identified as 42-year-old Sanjay Verma, a resident of Mau, Uttar Pradesh, failed to provide any satisfactory explanation or legal documentation to justify carrying such a substantial amount of money.

Following the discovery, Verma was brought to the RPF Post at the Howrah Goods Yard, where the cash was meticulously counted under CCTV surveillance, confirming a total of Rs 10,67,500. Given the lack of legal documentation for the funds, the RPF immediately notified the Income Tax Department. A team, led by Dy. Director (IT) Subhshis arrived at the post, verified the count, and subsequently took both the detainee and the seized cash into custody to initiate further investigation and necessary legal action.
