The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday February 1 felicitated the U19 women's team after winning the Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa. On Sunday, January 29, Shafali Verma-led India won the inaugural edition of the tournament after defeating Grace Scrivens' England by seven wickets in the final at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. The players of the Indian team were felicitated by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who became the first sportsperson and the youngest to win the Bharat Ratna award in 2014, and the BCCI office bearers.
Sachin and BCCI office bearers also gave a check of INR 5 crore to the Indian women's team. BCCI President Roger Binny and Secretary Jay Shah were also present. The ceremony was held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad ahead of the third and final T20I between Hardik Pandya's India and Mitchell Santner's New Zealand.
Earlier, former Indian cricketer and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly also praised the Indian team for its stunning performance in the World Cup. Ganguly tweeted: "Congratulations to the U19 women's team for winning the World Cup... it's a great stepping stone for the girls to take their game to the next level."
India won all their matches in the group stage before losing to Australia in their first Super 6 match. In the semi-finals, the Women in Blue beat New Zealand by eight wickets before beating England. Right-handed batsman Shweta Sehrawat and spinner Parshavi Chopra have been instrumental for India in their campaign. Sehrawat became the tournament's leading run-scorer after scoring 297 runs from seven matches at an average of 99 and a strike rate of 139.43 with three half-centuries and a top score of 92 not out.
