The Supreme Court has ordered IIT Dhanbad to admit Atul Kumar, a Dalit student from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, who lost his seat after missing the deadline to pay the admission fee. Kumar, 18, had successfully cleared the JEE exam and was allocated a seat in Electronics Engineering at the prestigious institute.
However, due to his inability to pay the fee by the June 24 deadline, he lost his seat. Kumar then approached both the Jharkhand High Court and the Madras High Court seeking relief but was unsuccessful. He finally took his case to the Supreme Court, which directed IIT Dhanbad to grant him admission despite missing the deadline.
This decision comes as a significant victory for Kumar, who had worked hard to clear the competitive exam in his last attempt, and marks an important intervention by the court in ensuring access to education.
