On Thursday, the Supreme Court resumed its hearing on the harrowing rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, leading the three-judge bench, debunked the controversial claim that "151 grams of semen" was found in the victim's body, reprimanding the counsel representing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for basing court arguments on unverified information from social media.
During the hearing, CJI Chandrachud stressed the importance of relying on credible evidence, cautioning against the influence of social media rumors in legal proceedings. He also appealed to the protesting doctors at RG Kar Medical College to return to work, assuring them that no punitive actions would be taken against them for their participation in the protests.
The three-judge bench, which includes Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra alongside the CJI, is overseeing the case as the investigation into the brutal crime continues.
