Schoolgirls block road in Behala over potholes, waterlogging and monsoon hazards

The road in front of Jot Shibrampur School in Behala has become severely damaged, especially during the ongoing monsoon. The stretch is filled with potholes and waterlogging, making it dangerous for daily commuters, particularly students. On Tuesday, several students of the school staged a road blockade, demanding immediate repairs. The school falls under the jurisdiction of Maheshtala Municipality and not Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Students said they face daily difficulties while using the road, which turns muddy and slippery during rainfall. "We use this road every day. It turns into a swamp during rain. Several girls have slipped, but no one listens," said one of the protesting students. Locals and school authorities have also expressed concerns about safety, stating that the road condition poses a threat to children walking to and from school, especially during peak monsoon days.

Residents claimed they have filed multiple complaints with the Maheshtala Municipality over the years, but no repair work has been initiated. The protesters have demanded that the road be repaired immediately to prevent further accidents. The area continues to receive rainfall, raising fears of worsening conditions on the damaged stretch. The demand from students, parents, and residents remains focused on swift repair and maintenance of the road.
